Eaton-Cummins Endurant Transmissions

Kenworth is offering to equip their T680 model with the Endurant, and Peterbilt with their 579 and 567 models

Want to know what Scott Davis, GM of Eaton Cummins has called a "game changer"? It's the new 12-speed automated transmission named Endurant. Two giants of the trucking industry, Kenworth and Peterbilt, are already offering the new transmission on a few lines of trucks.

Kenworth is offering to equip their T680 model with the Endurant, and Peterbilt announced they will make this transmission available with their 579 and 567 models. The Endurant transmission was designed with a purpose, and that purpose is for use with the Cummins X15 engine to help provide increased performance and lower maintenance costs.

In addition to better fuel efficiency and improvement in low-speed maneuverability, the transmission also features numerous industry-firsts. One of these firsts is an improvement on the lubrication system which has an amazing lube-change frequency of 750,000 miles. This is the largest change interval in the industry. Most competing lines require change after 250,000-500,000 miles.

The Endurant transmission reflects over a century's worth of evolution throughout Eaton's years of research and development on transmissions. This evolutionary changes have led to some key features of the Endurant transmission's design:

  • 750,000 mile lube-change frequency
  • A greaseless, maintenance-free clutch
  • Only 16 pints of oil are required
  • Improved resale-value with an 8 bolt PTO opening
  • A fully enclosed electrical system to reduce corroded wires
  • Look-ahead technology built into predictive shifting
  • Know when to replace your clutch with smarter prognostics
  • Among competitors, Endurant has the lowest cruise RPM rate

Endurant was not just a previous manual design that was adapted over to be automated. This transmission was specifically designed to address two main factors:

  • To increase performance over the entire lifetime of the unit
  • To be an economically rewarding option with low-cost maintenance and high-resale value
