How To Perform a Daily FMC Semi Truck Inspection

As with any vehicle, semi and heavy duty trucks must be carefully maintained to prevent major repairs. Part of maintaining your vehicle involves periodic inspections to ensure that everything is working properly. You don’t have to be a mechanic, as there are several different inspections that anyone can do. Here are some semi-truck maintenance tips to keep in mind when inspecting your vehicle.

Daily Inspection

Section 396.11 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation requires drivers to complete a daily vehicle inspection report. This report should cover components such as:

  • Steering
  • Parking brake
  • Lights and reflectors
  • Tires
  • Horn
  • Mirrors
  • Windshield wipers

Federal law also requires that any deficiencies be taken care of before you operate your rig. Fortunately, anyone can take care of the majority of these issues without any special tools or mechanical knowledge. Your truck should be equipped with an owner’s manual, or you can download one online. Maintenance manuals are also available for most models, and will provide more detailed information, including a maintenance schedule.

Other Inspections

You will need to inspect certain other components on a regular basis, including:

  • Oil and other fluids, which should be checked at least weekly or prior to a long haul
  • Radiator, to check for leaks and prevent overheating
  • Tire pressure, which must be measured weekly or any time there is a significant change in temperature
  • Fuel vent after your truck has been sitting for a few days to check for wasps or other insects
  • Brakes, as soon as you notice vibration, squealing, or grabbing

These simple inspections will help your heavy duty truck last longer and operate with greater fuel efficiency. If you ever do find yourself in need of repair, please contact us.
