Survey Highlights Importance of Summer Safety In Construction Zones

Every summer, increased road traffic collides with increased highway construction and maintenance.

Imagine working in a place where the annual odds of someone crashing into it exceed two in five. The 2017 Work Zone Awareness Survey says that is the case in highway work zones across the country.

The survey, conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC of America), reveals that 44 percent of road construction contractors reported that vehicles crashed in highway work zones where they were operating. says this number is up from 31 percent one year earlier. Consistent with that result, 82 percent of those surveyed believe the problem is worse now than 10 years ago. An AGC of America infographic further highlights key results of the survey.

Survey Leads to Radio Campaign

To acquire its data, AGC of America surveyed more than 700 contractors across the country in March-April 2017. In response to survey data, the organization is sponsoring a new advertising campaign designed to raise public awareness. Radio ads in dozen of major markets will remind motorists of the hazards of speeding, texting or otherwise getting distracted in work zones. The radio script includes these words: “When you see orange barrels, slow down, pay attention and put the phone away. Keep the men and women who maintain our roads safe, as well as you and your passengers.”
