Tesla Reveals Pricing for Its New Semi Truck

Tesla's Class 8 Semi was unveiled recently without pricing availalbe. Now Tesla has a full price listed for its largest vehicle. The Tesla Semi starts at $150,000 and goes up to $180,000 depending on the size of the battery pack. The preorder reservation price, which started at $5,000, is now $20,000 per truck. Apparently, the first 1,000 Tesla Semis will be sold as a special "Founders Series." The price for these particular models is set at $200,000. Those trucks will have the 500-mile range battery.

The price for these vehicles is significantly higher than a conventional diesel truck. A typical Class 8 rig can be found for a little over $100,000. That would make the Tesla Semi seem wildly overpriced. However, the vehicle has the potential to save up to $200,000 over the course of a million miles in fuel costs alone, so that means it would make up for its overall higher price. Also, electric vehicles are known for being low maintenance so an owner of a Tesla Semi should save money in that department, too.

The Tesla Semi is an impressive package boasting a fully electric powertrain and either a 300-mile or 500-mile range per charge. Its max load is 80,000 pounds and with that load, it can travel from 0-60 in just 20 seconds. About 80 percent of shipping routes are less than 250 miles. That means the vehicle would be able to do most daily routes on one battery charge. In its Class 8 truck, Tesla has a machine that could potentially change the trucking industry.

That being said, the company has a number of hurdles to overcome, including actually producing the trucks to meet demand. Currently, the company is struggling to produce enough of its new Model 3 car to meet its preordered demand. The Tesla Semi is supposed to go into production in 2019, but if the company continues to have issues, it may have to push that deadline back.

It will likely be some time until Tesla Semis roam American highways. Until then, Michigan Truck Sales and Equipment can get you everything you need for your conventional diesel truck. Contact us today!
